About the show
Little Shop of Horrors is a musical comedy that follows Seymour, a shy florist who stumbles upon a strange plant who he names Audrey II after his crush. The plant soon thrives under his care, and grows to become the failing flower shop’s number one attraction. Fame, fortune, and the attractions of Audrey follow.
Unfortunately it turns out the plant can only thrive if given a supply of human blood. As Seymour feeds the plant with more unfortunate souls, it grows monstrous, promising him success and love in exchange for a steady supply of victims.
All the cast is made up of students from our acclaimed and multi-award winning drama school. Interested in being involved in Limitless Academy of Performing Arts next production? Find out more about our musical theatre classes and get in touch to arrange a Free Taster Day.
Show history
Little Shop of Horrors was originally a low budget, horror B-movie from 1960. It was then adapted into a rock n’ roll musical comedy in 1982, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics and book by Howard Ashman. The show looked to spoof the original movie as well pay homage to low budget horror films from the time.
The show first premiered off-off-Broadway, which means it was performed at theatres with less than 99 seats (theatres not too unlike our Attic Theatre in Royston). It was then moved to an off-Broadway theatre (a theatre with 99-499 seats), before finally arriving to Broadway properly on 2nd October 2nd 2003 where it ran until 22nd August 2004.
The show appeared in London’s West End in March 2007 at the Duke of York’s Theatre. It ended its short run that September after transferring to the Ambassadors Theatre.
The show won several awards for best Off-Broadway musical in the US, and was nominated for an Olivier Award for best musical revival in the UK.
